Τhis panel seeks to identify novel and multi-disciplinary approaches focused on the growing importance of Information and Communication Technologies in structuring diverse aspects of private and public life. The aim is to bring together academics, researchers, and professionals to critically discuss the key debates in the area of New Media Studies and the theoretical frameworks and empirical evidence that is needed to properly assess them.
Multidisciplinary approaches to new media technologies in the 21st century, the communication environment has undergone a digital transformation, and digitalization is today considered to be reshaping our patterns of interaction, sociability, identity, culture, existing social institutions, networks, and habits of everyday life. Information and Communication Technologies (ICTs) are however far from having achieved any kind of “closure”; instead, they are constantly evolving, reshaping the social environment in often unprecedented ways that include both opportunities and risks.
During the last decades, and especially today at the pandemic days, the digital revolution that we have all experienced through the widespread deployment of ICTs has multilaterally influenced individual’s perceptions of significant aspects of everyday life. Among others, the massive adoption of Internet technologies and the transition to the Web 2.0 /3.0 paradigms (and beyond) have shaped a dynamically changing media environment. The proliferation of manageable multimedia capturing, processing, and sharing tools engaged people to be actively involved in the news production and consumption processes. As a result, new forms of digital journalism and mass communication are continuously launched and elaborated, thus advancing contemporary media services. Among others, easier information exchange is favored by the efficient collaboration between remotely-located users, groups, professionals, and experts of various kinds, therefore promoting pluralism and diversity with timely- and geographically-boundless news coverage (i.e. without the time and/or location restrictions). Along with the contemporary journalism technologies (i.e. robot-, drone-, immersive-journalism, etc.), new digital storytelling potentials also appear, aiming at offering enhanced capabilities of content capturing, processing automation, and augmented user interaction.

The proposed session has been formed to serve the highly demanding interdisciplinary needs of contemporary media and mediated communication. Both technological and social aspects of the rapidly changing media landscape are considered among the involved scientific disciplines, including, but not limited to, the following topics :
