Paschalia (Lia) Spyridou
Paschalia (Lia) Spyridou is Lecturer in Journalism and Media Studies at the Department of Social and Political Sciences at the University of Cyprus and the Coordinator of the undergraduate programme in Journalism Studies. She holds a PhD in Journalism and New Media from the Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and an MA in Communication from the University of Westminster in London. In 2012 she was awarded a postdoctoral fellowship from the Aristotle University for her research on participatory journalism. She has had research and teaching positions at the University of Macedonia (Greece), the Cyprus University of Technology and New York College in Thessaloniki. In 2014 she developed the first participatory platform in Cyprus (We Report Cyprus) in collaboration with the public broadcaster (CyBC) and since 2012 she has been a researcher and communication manager for the voting aid application choose4greece. She has collaborated with the Ministry of Eternal Affairs in Cyprus regarding the review of the Print Press Law. Her work has appeared among others in Journalism, Journalism Studies, Journalism Practice, European Journal of Communication, International Communication Gazette and has published book chapters in edited volumes by Routledge, Springer, Willey-Blackwell, Ashgate. Her research interests lie in the field of journalism studies, participatory media, political communication, and algorithmic studies. Currently her work focuses on alternative business models as potential drivers of change in the journalistic field, and explores the possibilities of user agency within the networked public sphere(s) created by social networks.
