Poothakool Krisanaphong

Lieutenant Colonel Krisanaphong Poothakool is a member of the Faculty of Police Science at the Royal Thai Police Academy. He is President of the MPA in Criminology & Criminal Justice Administration at Rangsit University (RSU), Bangkok. RSU is Thailand’s leading independent higher education institute. The Police Academy and RSU have agreed to work jointly on postgraduate education. Dr Poothakool acts as external examiner to the postgraduate programs in Criminal Justice Administration at Thammasart and Mahidol Universities, Bangkok. Prior to his current academic roles he was on extended research leave in the UK. He has also served with the National Criminal Investigations Bureau, Bangkok, and acted as Personal Secretary at Ministerial and Police-Commissioner level.
The Lieutenant Colonel attended the Armed Forces Academies Preparatory School, Bangkok, before attending the Royal Thai Police Cadet Academy, Nakhon Pathom. He graduated as a member of Class 51 with a BPA in Police Science. He holds an MSc and a PhD in Criminology from Mahidol University, Bangkok, and an MRes in Social Research and a PhD in Sociology from the University of Aberdeen, UK. His doctoral studies concerned reform of policing systems in general and of Thai policing in particular.
He works as national consultant with the UN Office on Drugs & Crime, the PSI Foundation Thailand and other NGOs, in association with Thai Narcotics Control Board, about law enforcement, harm minimisation and HIV. He is coordinator of a seminar series about the operation of criminal justice administration under the ASEAN Economic Community (AEC), 2014/15. He has been undertaking research on police reform, supported by the Royal Thai Police and funded by the Ministry of Justice, and he has been co-opted onto the Ministry of Justice’s Police Reform Committee.
The Academy, under its new Director General, and RSU, under its founding President, have agreed to support international collaborations to develop Thai policing methods, teaching and research, with English as the medium of education and  joint-working. Lieutenant Colonel Krisanaphong Poothakool has been charged with leading that effort, working with Tony Glendinning of RSU and the University of Aberdeen, UK. Key themes are policing under the AEC and Thai Police Reform. Links have been initiated in Asia with the Hong Kong City University.
